TRIP:The Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society and the property owner will provide snacks and soft drinks.


COLLECTING: Chert gravels with fossils (Mississippian, Devonian, and Silurian), petrified wood, agate, conglomerate, quartz and other rocks and minerals associated the Upland Complex of Pleistocene / Pliocene age.  We will be collecting the gravel from stockpiles.

 

BRING: Bucket and rock hammer, we will be surface collecting and no digging is necessary. Spray bottle with water is very helpful.Bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

 

REQUIREMENTS: All safety rules must be followed. A copy of the safety rules can be obtained from the Field Trip Leader.Remember, any time eye hazards may exist, such as hammering or prying, safety glasses MUST be worn. This is an active mine with dangerous areas. All young children must be under CONSTANT ADULT SUPERVISION and NEVER allowed to roam around.   Shoes must be closed and laced (no flip-flops or Crocs).

 

FEE:There is no fee.

CHILDREN (Yes): Okay with adult attendance and supervisor at all times.

 

PETS (Yes):Pets must be leashed at all times.

 

FACILITIES: There will be port-a-potties on site.

 

ACCOMMODATIONS:Several motels and an RV Park are located at the Church Road and Goodman Road exits off I-55 in Desoto County.

 

DIRECTIONS AND WHERE TO MEET: Registered participants will be sent a confirmation email with directions and meeting place details.Drive timefrom Memphis is about 45 minutes.

 

CARPOOLING: The registration form has a place for you to indicate if you need a ride; if you can offer a ride; or if you would like to drive or share a carpool ride. If you choose any of these options, your name, email address, and club name will be shared with other members who also choose one of the options. Then, you can communicate with one another to arrange carpools.

IMPORTANT: DMC field trips are open only to members of clubs in the SFMS DMC field trip sharing program. SFMS DMC club members are covered by liability insurance and they are bound by the AFMS code of ethics (click here to read them), but the general public is not and could jeopardize access to a collecting location. Please do not post DMC field trip information where the general public can access it.
